Bush Meat Has to Stop to Save The Chimpanzees

Chimpanzees in Africa face a grim reality. Their numbers have dwindled 75% over the last 30 years because of habitat loss and the illegal ape meat trade. Veterinarian Sheri Speede is dedicating her life to helping these primates. She moved from Oregon to Cameroon over ten years ago. At first she went to offer veterinary services but decided to open a chimpanzee rescue center after forming relationships with several adult chimpanzees in captivity.
The Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee rescue center currently houses 66 chimpanzees that range in age from two to over 40 years. The chimpanzees live in family groups. There are five enclosure complexes. All include large tracts of forest. Speede is also the president and founder of In Defense of Animals Africa. She has started a campaign to end the ape meat trade.
