Francois' Langur Monkeys Join The LA Zoo

LOS ANGELES—Two pairs of endangered species are settling in at the Los Angeles Zoo: two giant otters and two Francois' langurs, a kind of monkey from Southeast Asia.

Zoo officials announced the new arrivals on Wednesday.

The male and female monkeys came from the San Diego Zoo. They are active and noisy medium-sized primates, native to the rainforests and wetlands of China, Vietnam and Laos.

The population of Francois' langurs has been cut in half over the past 35 years, because of hunting and loss of habitat.

The giant otters are native to the rain forests and wetlands of north and central South America. They are also threatened by loss of habitat and hunted for their pelts, with only 1,000 to 5,000 left in the wild.
