Senate, UN To Preserve The Cross River Gorilla

By Emmanuel Aziken & Inalegwu Shaibu
ABUJA-The Senate is collaborating with the United Nations to preserve a rare specie of gorillas found in Nigeria known as the Cross River gorilla.

Chairman of the Senate committee on Environment and Ecology, Senator Grace Bent disclosed this yesterday during an interaction between the committee members with the UN Ambassador, UN Year of Gorilla, Mr. Ian Redmond.

Mr. Redmond in his briefing had told the committee that Nigeria is one of ten countries where gorillas are found in the wild warning that the possible extinction of the Cross River gorilla could lead to the elimination of some forest trees which in turn could negatively impact on human life.

On hand to receive the UN ambassador with Senator Bent yesterday were Senators Ume Uffot Ekaette and Garba Talba.

Noting that there were shrubs and trees that depended on gorillas for propagation, the Ambassador cautioned that failure by Nigeria to preserve the Cross River gorilla could in turn exacerbate lead to the elimination of those forest trees.

“Great apes and especially the largest of all, gorillas have always been a source of inspiration and fascination for humans; their close kinship to humans makes them stand out in the animal kingdom; genetic analysis shows that gorillas share 98.4% of their genes with humans.’’
